Chapter Ten

Waking up the next morning felt a little weird. I’d been sleeping inside this house for a while now, and yet, for some reason, I didn’t feel right opening my door or going downstairs. I wasn’t afraid of the guys or anything they’d say, it was more like excitement and not knowing how to contain myself.

My fox wiggled and chirped at me every chance she got. She was so hyper last night that I’d barely slept.

This normally wouldn’t have been a problem, but because it was the middle of the week, I still had to go to work. And shifting on the job wasn’t an option.

Oh no. Dova!

I was supposed to ride in with her this morning!

Shit. What time is it?

Throwing off the covers, I rubbed my eyes, then grabbed my phone. Oh, thank god, I thought with a heavy exhale of breath. It’s still early.

Early enough to make it down the steps half-dressed, that is.

But if I waited any longer…

A knock on my door sent me right back under the covers of my bed. I’m not sure why that was my initial reaction, but as Dova spoke on the other side, I couldn’t help checking the corners of my room just in case a monster had gotten in.

“Lynn? You up?”

“Yeah.” My voice cracked. “All good.”

“You sure?”

“Mm-hmm. Just overslept.” More like I didn’t get to sleep until dawn, but she didn’t have to know that.

“I’m taking a later shift,” she told me from the other side of the door, “so if you need more time–”

I flew out of bed and opened the door before she could finish. “You called out?” That didn’t sound like her at all.

“Just for the morning. I’ve gone in on my time off, so they’ll cover things for now.” Her face brightened as she spoke.

Great. Now I felt even worse. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“When it comes to my housemates, I do.” The way she spoke then, I couldn’t tell if she meant the others or me specifically.

“I’m sorry again about last night,” I said. “I never meant to hurt anyone.” Especially you.

“I know, but you were scared. Given your history, it’s understandable. But I want you to know something right now. No matter what you do or whatever you’ve done in the past, you’ll always have a place inside this house. Got it?”

I bobbed my head, then stepped into her open arms. “Thank you.”

“For?” She hugged me back, then lifted my chin with a finger.

“For being so understanding. For accepting me. For…” I chewed my bottom lip and bowed my head.

“Go ahead.”

“For being you.” I could've gone on, but considering the fact my throat tightened with every word, the most she would’ve gotten out of me were a series of short squeaks or squeals.

“It’s the only person I can be,” Dova said as she smoothed back my frizzy hair. “Just like you can’t help being who you are. Which has nothing to do with stereotypes, by the way. You’re very special to me,
