Chapter Ten
Waking up the next morning felt a little weird. Iâd been sleeping inside this house for a while now, and yet, for some reason, I didnât feel right opening my door or going downstairs. I wasnât afraid of the guys or anything theyâd say, it was more like excitement and not knowing how to contain myself.
My fox wiggled and chirped at me every chance she got. She was so hyper last night that Iâd barely slept.
This normally wouldnât have been a problem, but because it was the middle of the week, I still had to go to work. And shifting on the job wasnât an option.
Oh no. Dova!
I was supposed to ride in with her this morning!
Shit. What time is it?
Throwing off the covers, I rubbed my eyes, then grabbed my phone. Oh, thank god, I thought with a heavy exhale of breath. Itâs still early.
Early enough to make it down the steps half-dressed, that is.
But if I waited any longerâ¦
A knock on my door sent me right back under the covers of my bed. Iâm not sure why that was my initial reaction, but as Dova spoke on the other side, I couldnât help checking the corners of my room just in case a monster had gotten in.
âLynn? You up?â
âYeah.â My voice cracked. âAll good.â
âYou sure?â
âMm-hmm. Just overslept.â More like I didnât get to sleep until dawn, but she didnât have to know that.
âIâm taking a later shift,â she told me from the other side of the door, âso if you need more timeââ
I flew out of bed and opened the door before she could finish. âYou called out?â That didnât sound like her at all.
âJust for the morning. Iâve gone in on my time off, so theyâll cover things for now.â Her face brightened as she spoke.
Great. Now I felt even worse. âYou didnât have to do that.â
âWhen it comes to my housemates, I do.â The way she spoke then, I couldnât tell if she meant the others or me specifically.
âIâm sorry again about last night,â I said. âI never meant to hurt anyone.â Especially you.
âI know, but you were scared. Given your history, itâs understandable. But I want you to know something right now. No matter what you do or whatever youâve done in the past, youâll always have a place inside this house. Got it?â
I bobbed my head, then stepped into her open arms. âThank you.â
âFor?â She hugged me back, then lifted my chin with a finger.
âFor being so understanding. For accepting me. Forâ¦â I chewed my bottom lip and bowed my head.
âGo ahead.â
âFor being you.â I could've gone on, but considering the fact my throat tightened with every word, the most she wouldâve gotten out of me were a series of short squeaks or squeals.
âItâs the only person I can be,â Dova said as she smoothed back my frizzy hair. âJust like you canât help being who you are. Which has nothing to do with stereotypes, by the way. Youâre very special to me,
